How to Use the VNeID App: A Complete Guide for Citizens and Foreigners

Vietnam's digital identification application, VNeID, is transforming how citizens and residents manage personal information and access services. Developed by the country's Ministry of Public Security, the app serves as a digital platform for identity and authentication, centralizing personal data and streamlining interactions with government agencies.

Key Features and Uses of VNeID

The VNeID application integrates several key functions aimed at modernizing administrative processes and promoting a digital society.

  • Digital Identity: A primary feature of VNeID is its role as a digital substitute for physical identification documents. This allows for secure and convenient electronic verification of a person's identity, eliminating the need to carry traditional cards.

  • Administrative Services: The app provides a single portal for accessing a wide range of government services. Citizens and residents can handle tasks related to taxes, banking, and household registration through the digital platform, simplifying previously cumbersome procedures.

  • Domestic Travel: For those traveling within Vietnam, VNeID offers a more efficient airport experience. Passengers can use the app to generate a QR code for electronic identity verification at check-in and security, replacing the need for physical documents like a driver's license or national ID card.

  • Digital Citizenship: By centralizing personal data and facilitating digital transactions, VNeID is a cornerstone of Vietnam's push toward becoming a more developed digital society.

How It Works

The VNeID system is designed for ease of use. A user logs into the application on their mobile device and can activate a QR code. This code, when scanned by authorized personnel such as airport staff or government officials, authenticates the individual's identity and provides access to their integrated data and documents.

Requirements for Foreign Nationals and Businesses

The adoption of VNeID extends beyond Vietnamese citizens. Foreign nationals who hold a Temporary Residence Card (TRC) or a Permanent Residence Card are required to register for a Level 2 VNeID account starting in July 2025. This will become mandatory for engaging in various administrative processes and using public services.

Businesses are also encouraged to integrate VNeID into their own administrative procedures as part of the nationwide initiative for digital transformation. This adoption facilitates smoother and more secure verification processes for employees and customers alike.
